A slow checkout. A decision the team can use.

Should we rebuild checkout or fix the bottleneck?
- Inspect the trace. The tax-provider call blocks the confirmation screen. Evidence collected.
- Compare the options. A full rebuild leaves the same dependency. A timeout and recovery path address it directly. Trade-offs recorded.
- A bounded next change. Add the timeout, preserve the order and test a provider outage. Decision ready for team agreement.
A trace becomes a scoped engineering decision with an owner and an acceptance check.

FAQs
How is this different from advisory calls?
A fractional CTO engagement defines an ongoing remit, decision cadence and working relationship with your team. The responsibilities go beyond occasional advice when that is part of the agreed scope.
Does the CTO engagement include a development team?
Not automatically. Your engineers may implement the work, or a separate delivery engagement can provide the required capacity. The two responsibilities are scoped explicitly.
How much availability do we get?
Meeting cadence, working sessions, response expectations and escalation channels are agreed in the engagement. There is no implied round-the-clock incident coverage.
Can you help with hiring or vendor selection?
Yes. The remit can include role definition, interview scorecards, technical evaluation and vendor trade-offs. Hiring and commercial decisions remain with the business.
Can you work alongside our technical lead?
Yes. We agree which decisions belong to the lead, which require broader coordination and where additional leadership support is useful.
What happens when we hire a full-time CTO?
The engagement can include a planned transition with decision records, current risks, architecture context and introductions to the team and vendors.
Which decision is waiting on technical leadership?
Bring the roadmap, team structure and the trade-off you need to resolve.
